Scope & Content |
Gopal Ghosh (1913-1980) was born in Calcutta, West Bengal. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts, Jaipur, from 1931-35, and at the Madras Art School from 1935-38. He is one of the founders of the Calcutta Group in 1943. Known for his imaginative landscape painting, Ghosh was considered a master of watercolors, tempera and pastels. The six paintings in the collection were produced in the 1940s and all of the works are tempera paintings on paper. Ghosh's rural landscapes are treated with subtle and spare brushstrokes and calligraphic line, which often result in a form of dynamic abstraction. |
